Research Theme Summary

Cardiometabolic diseases are increasing worldwide, with diabetes and obesity rising sharply over the past four decades. In Chile and Sweden, they account for over 20% of annual deaths and place a major burden on public health systems. Despite known risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment still require stronger research on the molecular mechanisms driving these conditions. As cardiometabolic diseases are projected to cause more than 23 million deaths annually by 2030, integrated and adequately funded efforts across the full continuum of care remain essential. This Research Theme aims to strengthen the ACCESS collaboration by building an effective research network to advance knowledge and develop innovative therapies. Through transdisciplinary research linking basic and clinical sciences, together with industry partnerships, it seeks to reduce preventable mortality, improve quality of life, and ease public health burdens in both countries.

 
 

Desired Expertise

We hope to attract researchers with expertise in cardiometabolic disease, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular health, hypertension, lipid metabolism, and preventive medicine, as well as complementary strengths in molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, pharmacogenomics, epigenetics, RNA biology, epitranscriptomics, and non-coding RNAs. We also seek participants from clinical research, epidemiology, public health, translational medicine, and computational biology or bioinformatics. To strengthen the workshop’s transdisciplinary character, we welcome researchers working on related methodological or applied areas, including biomarker discovery, data analysis, precision medicine, health innovation, and industry-oriented therapeutic development. This mix of expertise will support integrated discussion and the co-development of innovative approaches to cardiometabolic disease prevention and treatment.

 
 
 
 

About the ACCESS Forum & Research Themes (RTs)

  • The ACCESS Forum is an immersive, bi-national event held every 18 months that connects scholars across Chilean and Swedish member universities to address global societal challenges. Rather than functioning as a standard academic conference with passive presentations, an ACCESS workshop operates as an intensive, dedicated "working laboratory."

    Participants commit to a single Research Theme (RT)—a targeted, co-led scientific initiative aligned with the ACCESS Research Framework. Over four days of collaborative work sessions, interactive discussions, and co-design activities, participants remain with the same cohort to move research ideas from concept to action.

  • By joining our workshop cohort at the upcoming ACCESS Forum, you will:

    • Co-Develop Concrete Outcomes: Work directly toward joint academic publications, collaborative grant proposals (e.g., ANID, STINT, Horizon Europe), co-supervision of PhD candidates, etc.

    • Cross-Contextual Insights: Exchange datasets, methodologies, and local perspectives between Chilean and Swedish contexts.

    • Expand Your Network: Connect with senior researchers, Early Career Researchers (ECRs), and non-academic stakeholders across both research and innovation ecosystems.
