Biodiversity Changes in a Changing World: Challenges and Experiences from Chile and Sweden

Research Theme Summary

Biodiversity is threatened by global human drivers, including climate change and chemical pollution. There is increasing pressure for more sustainable development and greater protection of existing biodiversity. We discussed the current challenges facing both terrestrial and aquatic environments globally, with a particular focus on Chile and Sweden.

Further research is crucial to understand the complex interactions between human activities and ecosystems, and to develop effective strategies for sustainable development that promote biodiversity conservation and mitigate environmental degradation.

Results

The workshop reveals the interconnectedness of environmental, economic, and social factors in addressing biodiversity loss. Transdisciplinary collaboration is essential, with environmental science findings informing economic models and social policies.

Experiences from both Chile and Sweden highlight the value of learning from diverse approaches. By comparing strategies, researchers can identify successful models for biodiversity protection and adapt them to local contexts. This exchange of knowledge fosters a global community working towards sustainable development and a healthier planet for all. Ultimately, the discussion emphasizes that preserving biodiversity is not solely an ecological concern but a fundamental pillar for human wellbeing and a thriving economy.
