A Decade of Collaboration

Established in 2016, ACCESS was founded by Lund University, Uppsala University, UC Chile, and Universidad de Chile to bridge the distance between our nations. This partnership aimed to deepen academic relations by connecting researchers, staff, and students across all disciplines.

What we do.

Since it’s inception, the ACCESS Forums have been the main space where over 1,000 researchers and PhD students across Chile and Sweden have come together to collaborate on over 53 interdisciplinary research themes.

Who’s involved.

In the past 10 years, ACCESS has evolved from a pilot initiative into a robust alliance of member universities. We are proud of the unwavering commitment of our members, whose collaborative spirit transforms academic relations into impactful, real-world solutions.

Our reach.

The strategic relevance of ACCESS is driven by its leadership, which has adaptively guided the platform through three iterations to ensure deep-rooted bilateral impact. By keeping the platform evolving and consistently vital, our leadership has secured high-level recognition—from its naming by the Chilean President during the 2016 State Visit to President Gabriel Boric’s keynote at the 2024 ACCESS Forum.

These milestones reflect our unique capacity to align academic excellence with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, turning shared global challenges into collaborative opportunities for progress.

Our promise.

ACCESS aligns its research with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, bridging academic fields to meet societal needs in Chile and Sweden. By fostering transdisciplinary action—from climate and health to social justice—we ensure our collaboration drives tangible environmental and social progress.

Our legacy.

PhD students are a priority stakeholder for ACCESS, intentionally integrated into every research workshop. Through dedicated pre-Forum events and joint courses, we provide emerging scholars with specialized training and direct entry into international networks—purposefully engaging the next generation to secure future collaboration between Chile and Sweden.
